In the 1840s, the first settlers came to Plano to take advantage of land grants on the Blackland Prairie. The arrival of the railway in 1872 linked the town to Dallas and Houston. The rural farming community then transitioned to large cotton farms and cattle ranches. By 1874 the population was over 500 residents. The city was incorporated in June, 1873, and the town’s first official mayor was C.J.E. Kellner. Throughout much of the century Plano relied on surrounding farms and ranches for its livelihood.
In the 1960’s and 1970’s, the growth in Dallas and the success of several large high-technology firms helped to fuel the growth in Plano. During this time, Plano was one of the fastest-growing cities in Texas and the U.S.
In the 1980’s and 1990’s the growth in Plano and much of Collin County continued. Residents continued to find Plano a highly-desired location with corporate headquarters moving to the area and the extension of Highway 75-Central Expressway as well as the Dallas North Tollway making a commute into Dallas more convenient. Many professionals and executives began moving to the city during this time.
As we moved into the 2000’s and beyond, there is still growth in Plano. Corporate headquarters are still finding their way to the city of Plano, and there are still new homes to be found in town. Plano – A City of Excellence.
